Privacy Policy — Piece
Effective date: 19 April 2026 | Last updated: 13 May 2026
The Piece mobile application and any website or support channels we operate (together, Piece) are operated by David Alia (ABN 39 122 762 595) (we, us, or our). David Alia is established only in Australia (postal address below). Our business and regulatory home for this Policy is Australia, unless mandatory local law where you live says otherwise.
Marketing (for now): we currently advertise and promote Piece only in Australia (including paid user acquisition and similar campaigns). The App may still be discovered, downloaded, or used by people outside Australia (for example, organic app store visibility, word of mouth, or use while travelling). This Policy applies to anyone who uses Piece, wherever they are located, subject to mandatory local laws that cannot be overridden by this Policy.
We understand that protecting your personal information is important. This Privacy Policy sets out how we collect, use, store, and share personal information when you interact with Piece.
Our Terms & Conditions are published wherever we make these documents available (for example, app store listings).
Australian privacy law
We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) in respect of personal information we collect in the course of our Australian operations and when the APPs apply to our acts or practices.
You can learn more about the APPs from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC): https://www.oaic.gov.au/
Personal information
Personal information means information or an opinion about an identified or reasonably identifiable individual, whether or not true, and whether recorded in a material form or not. Depending on where you live, similar terms (such as personal data) may apply.
Sensitive information (or special category data in some regions) is personal information that laws treat as higher risk — for example, information about health, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or biometric data used for identification. You should avoid submitting sensitive information unless you choose to include it in your own narrative. If you do, we will handle it in line with this Policy and applicable law (which may require a stricter legal basis in some countries).
The information we collect
The types of personal information we may collect about you (or about another person whose details you enter) include:
- Identity and profile data — such as first names or labels for each person in the couple, optional year of birth, optional gender, and any profile fields you save in the App.
- Relationship narrative content — free-text descriptions of each person's perspective on a disagreement, including text produced when you use voice recording features that are transcribed to text.
- Preference data — such as tone of voice and analysis level you select for AI-generated commentary.
- Technical and usage data — when you use Piece, we or our service providers may collect information such as IP address, device type, operating system, app version, approximate timestamps, request metadata, diagnostics, and crash reports.
- Advertising — we use Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) to display ads in the App. We do not share your Piece personal information with AdMob. If Google receives any information when ads load, it is collected by Google under Google's own privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
How we collect personal information
- When you provide it directly to us — for example, when you type text into the App, use recording features, choose settings, or email us.
- When you use Piece — including when your device communicates with our servers and third-party service providers.
- When it is stored on your device — certain profile-style information may be saved locally on your phone and is only sent to us when you use features that require server processing.
- Automatically — through logging, security monitoring, error reporting, in-app advertising SDKs, and any analytics tools we enable.
- From third parties — where relevant, for example analytics vendors we configure, subject to their policies and your settings.
If someone else's information is included because you entered it, you are responsible for having their consent.
Why we collect, hold, use, and disclose personal information
- To provide Piece — including to receive your content, run speech-to-text, run AI-assisted analysis, and return results to your device.
- To operate, secure, and improve our systems — including debugging, abuse detection, rate limiting, and quality assurance.
- To communicate with you — including responding to support requests or enquiries.
- To comply with law — including responding to lawful requests from public authorities.
- To enforce our terms — including protecting our rights, users, and the integrity of the Service.
- To show advertising — we integrate Google AdMob so that ads can be displayed. We do not use your Piece personal information to target or personalise ads.
Legal bases (EEA, UK, and Switzerland)
If the GDPR (EU), UK GDPR, or Swiss data protection law applies to our processing of your personal data, we rely on one or more of the following:
- Performance of a contract — processing necessary to provide Piece when you use features that require our backend.
- Legitimate interests — for example to secure the Service, prevent abuse, and improve reliability.
- Consent — where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.
Our disclosures of personal information to third parties
We will only disclose personal information where it is necessary to operate Piece, where we have your consent, or where permitted or required by law.
We may disclose personal information to:
- Our employees, contractors, and related entities who need access to operate the Service.
- IT service providers — including hosting, serverless, database, and infrastructure providers.
- OpenAI — to provide AI-assisted analysis and speech-to-text via their APIs: https://openai.com/policies
- Google — for Google Mobile Ads (AdMob). We do not pass Piece narrative content to AdMob for advertising.
- Professional advisers — such as lawyers or accountants, where needed.
- Courts, regulators, or law enforcement — when required or authorised by law.
We do not sell your Piece personal information to third parties.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
We use Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) to display advertisements in Piece. We do not share any Piece personal information with AdMob. When an ad is requested or shown, Google's systems may process information as described in Google's Privacy Policy.
You can learn about Google's ad settings at: https://adssettings.google.com
Artificial intelligence (AI)
Piece uses third-party AI and speech technologies (for example, large language models and transcription models) via OpenAI APIs to provide argument analysis and voice-to-text.
- In-app consent: Before any of your data is sent to OpenAI, Piece displays a clear disclosure of what information will be shared and with whom, and requires your explicit consent. You must accept before argument analysis can proceed. You may decline, in which case no data is sent to OpenAI, though argument analysis will not be available.
- What we send: Specifically, we send: your first names or labels, the full text of each person's perspective (either typed or transcribed from voice recordings), your tone of voice and analysis level preferences, and your locale (language). For voice features, we also send your audio recording to OpenAI's speech-to-text service (Whisper). We aim to send only what is necessary for each request.
- Transient processing: Your data is processed transiently by OpenAI to generate the analysis result. It is not stored by OpenAI beyond what is needed to complete the request and is not used to train AI models. We access OpenAI services through their API platform, governed by OpenAI's Data Processing Addendum and enterprise-grade data handling commitments.
- Retention and training: We do not use your relationship dispute content to train our own models. OpenAI describes how API content may be handled (including abuse monitoring, safety, and short-term retention) in its policies: https://openai.com/policies
- Accuracy and limits: AI output can be wrong or inappropriate. It is not human-reviewed therapeutic, legal, or medical advice.
International transfers
We are based in Australia. Personal information may be processed, stored, or accessed in countries other than your own, including where our hosting, OpenAI, Google, or other providers operate (commonly including the United States).
- Australia: We take steps that are reasonable in the circumstances when we disclose personal information overseas.
- EEA / UK / Switzerland: Where applicable law requires, we use appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or equivalent mechanisms.
Retention
We keep personal information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this Policy, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law.
- Server logs and security records — for a limited period needed for operations and security.
- Content you submit for transcription or analysis — processed to return results to you.
- Data stored only on your device — until you clear app data or uninstall the App.
Your rights and controlling your personal information
Your choice: If you do not provide certain information, some features may not work. Profile-style data stored only on your device can often be removed by clearing app data or uninstalling the App.
Information from third parties: If you provide personal information about another person, you represent that you have the authority and consent required under applicable law.
Access: You may request access to personal information we hold about you.
Correction: You may request correction of information that is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, or misleading.
Complaints: You may complain to a supervisory authority or regulator:
Other rights: Depending on your location, you may have rights to delete, restrict, object, portability, withdraw consent, or opt out of certain processing.
Storage and security
We use technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk, including access controls and secure transmission where practicable. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
Children's data
Piece is not intended for individuals under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised Policy and update the "Last updated" date.
